Melanotan II (MT-II) is a synthetic cyclic 7-amino-acid analog of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH). Its sequence is Ac-Nle-cyclo[Asp-His-D-Phe-Arg-Trp-Lys]-NH2 with a molecular weight of approximately 1,024.2 Da, and it was first synthesized at the University of Arizona in the late 1980s. Melanotan II is studied in research models as a non-selective agonist of melanocortin receptors (MC1R, MC3R, MC4R, MC5R), with research applications investigating melanogenesis pathways, energy homeostasis signaling, and central melanocortin system function.
