LL-37 is the only human cathelicidin host defense peptide, consisting of 37 amino acids cleaved from the C-terminus of the hCAP18 precursor protein. Its sequence is Leu-Leu-Gly-Asp-Phe-Phe-Arg-Lys-Ser-Lys-Glu-Lys-Ile-Gly-Lys-Glu-Phe-Lys-Arg-Ile-Val-Gln-Arg-Ile-Lys-Asp-Phe-Leu-Arg-Asn-Leu-Val-Pro-Arg-Thr-Glu-Ser with a molecular weight of approximately 4,493.3 Da. First characterized in published research literature in the mid-1990s, LL-37 is studied in research models investigating antimicrobial activity against bacteria, viruses, and fungi, as well as immunomodulatory signaling and host-pathogen interaction pathways.
